ALBION
probably holds its name from the steep cliff that traveller associated with the
cliffs of Dover on the English Channel.
The main
attraction of Albion is the Lighthouse which has guided the ships approaching
the capital, Port Louis, 10 miles or 30 minutes to the north east. You can
enjoy a short promenade to the sandy public beach.
Albion
originally grew cotton for the East India Company switching to growing and
refining sugar, Mauritius's staple export. The town languished during the
latter half of the 20th century and avoided the excesses of the tourist
trade.
In the twenty
first century Albion is becoming a quality residential area - property market
is booming - and new shops and restaurants are opening their
doors. |
